This opening fixture was delayed by 15 minutes to allow visiting Sheffield Wednesday fans extra time to arrive at the ground due to traffic congestion outside the area.
Their wait was rewarded with three goals in 23 minutes as Lloyd Owusu and Shefki Kuqi put them on target for a quick return to the First Division as they punished an inept Swindon defence and poor handling by Swindon keeper Bart Griemink.
Despite starting well with three away points Owls boss Chris Turner was not overly impressed with his side's performance: "We didn't play well, but we have the points and it is all about maintaining our position." It was not all one-way traffic as Stefani Miglioranzi handed Swindon a lifeline on the half hour with Sam Igoe reducing the deficit further with a clinical free-kick on 55 minutes that crept in off the post much to the annoyance of the new Owls keeper Ola Tidman and boss Turner who complained: "I felt the kick should have been retaken he said as our keeper was still organising the wall when the ball hit the post." Swindon boss Andy King was full of praise for his team despite the scoreline: "Last year we were winning and getting booed of the pitch, we lost and were cheered off and I have told the boys they must keep this up to keep the fans believing." A touch of sadness surrounded the proceedings with the news that former loan star Jimmy Davis, who made ten appearances last season, had been killed in a car crash earlier in the day.
"It is extremely saddening to hear the news," expressed Andy King. "If I didn't have to be out here I wouldn't be under the circumstances." Both sets of fans can take heart that on the performance by both will see them chasing honours come next May.
