Sheffield Wednesday moved up into automatic promotion places in League One on Saturday thanks to a comprehensive 6-2 home victory against Bristol Rovers. Incoming Chairman Milan Mandaric took the plaudits of the crowd prior to kick-off and then Alan Irvine’s side showed him exactly what they are capable of. Irvine, without the services of Buxton and Otsemobor, opted to go with Daniel Jones at right-back and that was the only change to the side that had lost at Swindon last weekend. Despite the welcome thaw from the wintery conditions Wednesday were caught cold by the visitors and fell behind after just 7 minutes when former Rotherham striker Will Hoskins found space at the back post to head home in front of the Kop. The goal had come against the run of play as the Owls had started brightly and they missed an immediate chance to level when Morrison somehow clipped an effort over the bar with the goal gaping. it didn’t take them long to restore parity though as on 10 minutes Morrison saw his effort from Teale’s cross saved but Sedgwick was on hand to nod in the rebound . Teale then saw a fierce drive tipped away by Andersen in the Rovers’ goal but the keeper could do nothing to prevent the hosts from taking the lead on 23 minutes. The Owls were continuing to press forward and when a cross was only half-cleared to Miller on the edge of the area the midfielder rasped a well placed shot into the Pirates goal. Having got themselves in front Wednesday went for the jugular and increased their lead three minutes later when Morrison was again denied by an Andersen save only for Teale to be on hand to tap in the rebound. The shell-shocked Bristol side went 4-1 down just after the half-hour mark as Jermaine Johnson glided his way past three defenders before beating the keeper with an assured finish. Left-footed right-back Daniel Jones went close to adding a fifth on two occasions before half-time, cutting inside and firing two low drives into the side netting and half-time couldn’t come soon enough for Bristol. Perhaps understandably, Wednesday failed to maintain the intensity in attack at the start of the second half and Rovers grabbed a goal back on 65 when the ball fell to Hoskins on the angle on the penalty area and his hopeful effort looped in over Nicky Weaver. The goal seemed to spark the home side back into life and they restored their 3-goal lead on 71 minutes. Heffernan had replaced Johnson then O’Connor came on for Potter and within a minute of entering the fray the midfielder played a neat one-two with Morrison before firing past Andersen. Wednesday were not done yet and Teale went close to adding a sixth, clipping the crossbar from long range before Heffernan opened his Owls account with 10 minutes to go, latching onto a Morrison through ball to score with a low drive in front of the home fans. There was still time for the hard-working but luckless Morrison to hit the post, again with the goal seemingly at his mercy as Wednesday moved to within three points of league leaders Brighton.
