A goal by Richard Cresswell six minutes from time earned Preston a point at Deepdale on a sunny afternoon watched by 13,632.
Preston took the lead in the 13th minute when Ricardo Fuller scored his fifth goal of the season. It was a throw-in on the left wing by Rob Edwards that eventually fell to Fuller, who dribbled past a few defenders before his right-foot shot from ten yards took a deflection and Kevin Pressman was wrong-footed and the ball went in off the bar into the top right-hand corner.
Wednesday equalised in the 35th minute when a Gerald Sibon right-wing cross fell to Shefki Kuqi, who beat Colin Murdock before hitting a right-foot shot from seven yards past the Preston goalkeeper Tepi Moilanen who touched the ball into the bottom left -hand corner of the net.
It was Kuqi's fourth goal in the league this season.
Paul McKenna was booked for retaliating after a foul on Leon Knight in the 40th minute.
There was a double substitution at half time with Alan Quinn replacing Trond Soltvedt and Marlon Broomes replacing Edwards.
In the 72nd minute Cresswell had the ball in the back of the net, but this was disallowed for a foul.
USA international Eddie Lewis was substituted in the 73rd minute by David Healy and it was Sheffield Wednesday who made it 2-1 in the 76th minute.
Paul McLaren latched on to a poor clearance and he hit a right-foot half volley from 15 yards into the top right-hand corner of the net.
Preston got a late equaliser with six minutes to go when Erik Skora passed from the left, was met at close range by Cresswell.
Leigh Bromby was booked for a foul on Fuller in the 87th minute
