Sheffield Wednesday’s Under 23 development team ended their 2016-17 season in style on Friday night by beating Hull City to win the Premier Development League 2 national play-off final.
The young Owls finished top of the PDL2 North to reach the national play-offs and having seen off Millwall in the semi-finals, they overcame Hull in front of a healthy crowd at Hillsborough.
Two first-half goals from hot prospect George Hirst put the home side firmly in control but a penalty shortly before half-time gave the visitors hope going into the break.
Liam Williams restored Wednesday’s 2-goal lead midway through the 2nd half with a thumping header from a corner and the Owls saw the game out from there to lift the trophy in front of the south stand.
