Young defender Wood came back into the side yesterday to replace loanee Hasney Aljofree, who was injured and returned to Plymouth.
The Owls beat Barnsley 1-0 thanks to a first-half headed goal from Adam Proudlock and at times dominated their Yorkshire rivals.
Wood slotted into his preferred position of centre-half with ease and played well alongside Lee Bullen before being switched to left-back to accommodate for Paul Smith, who snapped knee ligaments and is set to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
But Wednesday are a lot more solid these days and only one goal conceded in three league games under Paul Sturrock is testament to that new found back-line stability.
Wood though heaps praise on new coach Blackley by saying: "John is a very good defensive coach and he helps us out a lot and you can see from the game that our defensive shape is a solid four and looks good and we have to keep that momentum going.
"The gaffer and John are talking to us a lot more and encouraging us to talk between ourselves more which is encouraging," he told Footymad.
Since Sturrock took over at Hillsborough, there has been a new-found belief at the club but Wood acknowledges that the three road games at Peterborough tomorrow, Bradford on Saturday and Swindon the following Wednesday will be vital towards The Owls' promotion prospects.
He added: "The win against Barnsley was fantastic and it is just what we needed to get the season going for us. Seven points from nine since Paul came in is a great record and hopefully we can continue that run on Tuesday at Peterborough.
"This run of three away games in eight days will make or break our season, we are gunning for promotion and these games will be imperative towards that goal."
