The young defender played well in the middle of the defence alongside Lee Bullen and performed well in the heat in Dronfield.
Wednesday opened the scoring through a Chris Brunt free kick which was fumbled by the Sheffield goalkeeper, Danny Reet made it two by following up on his own saved shot while Lee Peacock's classy header made it 3-0 before Sheffield got one back thanks to a cracking Cobnell strike from 25 yards.
In the second half, the gulf in class continued to show when Steve MacLean comfortably put away a penalty after a handball in the area and Peacock tapped in following a dummy from MacLean to make it 5-1.
MacLean's second came on 84 minutes and his shot looked like it was comfortable for the goalkeeper but again he spilled it into the Sheffield goal and Chris Brunt got his second and the final Owls goal with a header after some good work from Bullen.
Wood after the game told Footymad: "It was a very good workout and it was just what we needed to get our fitness back up. It was a good game, we did really well. They caused us a few problems at first but in the end, the result showed the gap between the two sides and we kept on going."
On keeping his place in the side, he said: "The new signings don’t worry me, at the end of the day we all have to fight for our places throughout the season, I just hopefully can continue playing as well as I did towards the end of the season and hopefully get picked at Stoke."
John Hills made his debut in the game but Paul Sturrock will not be persuing with Anton Robinson, a trailist from Millwall who played for 60 minutes.
