Wolves Vs Owls: team news

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday with a shortage of strikers, which could make Owls boss Brian Laws consider a change of formation.

Akpo Sodje and Marcus Tudgay, both of whom scored a brace on the opening day last weekend are set to be missing from the Owls line up with Sodje unlikely to return inside a month.

With Francis Jeffers expected to play for the reserves next week it is most probable that he will not feature at Molineux and that leaves just Deon Burton and Leon Clarke as recognised, experienced strikers. Burton is certain to start but Clarke struggled in the League Cup defeat to Rotherham in midweek. The former Wolves man looked off the pace and may only be saved his starting place by the notion of having added motivation to perform against his one-time employers.

If Clarke does make way then the Owls could revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation with Johnson and Esajas supporting Burton from wide positions, two players sitting in front of the back four and Jimmy Smith playing further forward in midfield, although he also looked short of match sharpness in midweek.

Wolves themselves had to come through extra time to see off Accrington Stanley in the Carling Cup and will be looking to add to the point they picked up against Plymouth last weekend.

The home side have an abundance of attacking options with the likes of Ebanks-Blake, Keogh, Kightly, Vokes and Iwelumo all in contention while their only injury absentees are young midfielder Lewis Gobern and goalkeeper Matt Murray. The loss of Murray is compensated by the fact they are blessed with two quality keepers with Welsh international Wayne Hennessey currently holding down the number one spot.

Wednesday have a creditable record at Molineux since returning to the Championship in 2005, having won one, drawn one and lost one. Wolves won last seasons encounter 2-1 thanks to a last minute winner from Ebanks-Blake.
