The winger, who also played in central midfield during pre-season, has been out of first team action since Boxing Day 2002 and has had plenty of fresh setbacks since then.
But now the fit-again Hamshaw is ready to give his all for The Owls after a lengthy spell on the sidelines although could still have doubts over the strength of his knee should a 50-50 tackle arise.
He admitted to Footymad: "I think I am a little more cautious going into challenges these days but not in the actual moment.
"I don’t think about it much at the time but after the game things do cross your mind and you say to yourself ‘you shouldn’t have done that’ but if you are a first-team player for Sheffield Wednesday, anyone would put their foot in for the cause, that’s the way I look at it."
Despite Hammy having a first-hand view of the club from inside the walls of Hillsborough during the last four years of decline, he thinks that The Owls can bounce back from it's bad times and become strong again.
He says: "The last few years have been disappointing for both the club and I but it is important to concentrate on the future more than the past.
"It has been a torrid time for the club and there is no doubting that – this club is a sleeping giant and should be in the Premiership and everyone knows that but reality is different and you have to realise where you are and we are in league one now.
"It is difficult for the fans but they have to believe, the players have to believe and everyone associated with the club has to believe that things will get better.
"The manager and I know that if we play well, we will be getting 30,000 fans supporting us and there is no reason why we can’t bounce back and the manager or players who achieve that will be heroes here."
