Wednesday Vs Chesterfield: Team news & preview
Sheffield Wednesday face Chesterfield in the League Cup at Hillsborough tonight with Carlos Carvalhal’s side in need of a morale boosting win.
The Owls came in for a lot of stick for their opening day defeat at Preston on Saturday, as much for the meek manner of the 1-0 reverse as for the actual result.
With a big squad to choose from Wednesday are likely to rest some key players but anything less than a resounding home win will do little to appease the frustrated fans. The likes of Westwood, Hutchinson and Forestieri are not expected to feature while Kieran Lee and Liam Palmer remain side-lined due to injury.
There may be a run out for Almen Abdi who has been struggling with a knee injury and Wildsmith, Matias, Fox, Hooper, Winnall and Fletcher could all come into contention.
Chesterfield’s campaign also got off to a sticky start as they were beaten 3-1 by Grimsby at the weekend. Manager Gary Caldwell will be without the services of Ian Evatt as the veteran defender was sent of late on in Saturday’s home defeat.
The Spireites fielded 7 debutants on Saturday, they looked good for spells going forward but vulnerable defensively and will need to improve if they are to keep Wednesday’s wealth of attacking talent at bay.
Wednesday were defeated at the first hurdle of this competition last season when they lost at Cambridge but a run to the quarter-finals in 2015-16 which included victories over Premier League sides Newcastle and Arsenal helped boost confidence that season and although the league is the priority a much needed win here would help to get things back on track ahead of 2 home Championship fixtures in the next week.
