Sheffield Wednesday have announced that former manager Howard Wilkinson has returned to the club in an advisory capacity.
The club made the announcement on swfc.co.uk and the official title of the job that is to be undertaken by Wilkinson is that of technical advisor.
New Chairman Lee Strafford admitted that both he and new Chief Executive, Nick Parker have very little in the way of experience and contacts within the football industry and he envisages Wilkinson being able to establish key networking links.
It is hoped that Wilkinson's vast wealth of experience within the sport will help them to create a long term strategy that will see the club push for a return to the Premier League.
The club have been quick to stress that Wilkinson is not coming in as a director of football and as such will not have any direct input with regards to on-field first team matters, manager Brian Laws has welcomed the move and believes that Wilkinson will be a major asset within the infrastructure of the club.
Howard Wilkinson was Owls manager during the 1980's and guided them to promotion to the top flight before securing a 5th placed finish in the old division one in the 1985/86 season.
He then went on to manage Leeds, leading them to the last ever old first division title before the formation of the Premier League.
During the late 90's he took on the role of technical director at the F.A. and had a one game spell in caretaker charge of the national team following the departure of Kevin Keegan.
In 2002 he returned to club management with Sunderland alongside Steve Cotterill but his reign was a brief and unsuccessful one as the club were relegated from the Premier League having won only two of twenty league games under his leadership.
Wilkinson is the Chairman of the League Managers Association and expected to continue in this capacity despite his return to Hillsborough.
The news of new arrivals at S6 is expected to continue in the coming days as Brian Laws hopes to add to new faces to his squad within the next week or so. He has looked at a number of options, all apparently with good Championship experience. The positions that the club are looking to strengthen in are central midfield and on the wing and with this in mind the anticipated return of Bartosz Slusarski from West Bromwich Albion now looks to be off.
