Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed they are in talks with 5 players regarding extending their stays at Hillsborough.

The 5 out-of-contract players that the club are interested in holding on to are Chris Kirkland, Glenn Loovens, Jose Semedo, Kieran Lee and Chris Maguire.

Goalkeeper Kirkland has had to play 2nd fiddle to Keiren Westwood for most of the season as the Republic of Ireland international proved himself to be the best keeper in the Championship. Few clubs if any at this level can boast a back up keeper of the quality of Kirkland and the Owls will be keen to retain his services.

Glenn Loovens formed a solid defensive partnership with Tom Lees at the start of last season and the Owls looked a more solid unit when the pair played together. Loovens was forced to miss a large part of the 2nd half of the campaign due to injury.

Jose Semedo was probably regarded as a squad player who would featre mainly as back up when the season started but his performances in the holding midfield role saw him pin down a first-team place for the majority of the season.

Kieran Lee got off to a slow start this season but has come into his own since the turn of the year and has added goals to his assured passing style.

Chris Maguire can be a frustrating player to watch but hasn't been found lacking in effort and desire and when he is on his game he is capable of scoring important goals and has knack for winding opposition players and fans up which has endeared him to sections of the Owls faithful.

Having opened discussions with these 5 players, Wednesday have taken the decision to let 11 players go, more information on which can be found here: http://www.sheffieldwednesday-mad.co.uk/news/tmnw/owls_let_11_go_861261/index.shtml
