Following the news that Hafiz Mammadov has moved to take control of Sheffield Wednesday, buying the club for a fee believed to be in the region of 50M Euro, ex Owls star Chris Waddle has been linked with a return to the club.
French sports paper L'Equipe broke the news on their website today that the takeover had been completed in London on Sunday have reported that Waddle is set to return to the club in a coaching role.
Mammadov is reported as having spoken to Waddle, who used to play for Marseille in France, ahead of his takeover and is said to be keen to get the former England international on board.
Waddle was a favourite of many Owls fans in the successful teams of the early/mid/90's, scoring in the F.A. Cup semi-final win against bitter rivals Sheffield United at Wembley and also in the cup final replay against Arsenal in 1993. The mesmeric winger was award the Football Writers Player of the Year award in the same year.
His only major foray into management to date was a largely unsuccessful season as player manager of Burnley in 1997/98 in which the club finished in the bottom half of the division now known as the Championship.
Waddle has remained an admirer of the club and the area having settled in the city and been seen watching the Owls from the stands home and away on a number of occasions but there has been nothing as yet to substantiate this story in L'Equipe and there has been no official comment made on this by Waddle, Wednesday or Mr. Mammadov.
