Championship line up for 2019-20 confirmed
Aston Villa clinched their place in the Premier League on Monday by beating Derby County in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
Goals from El Ghazi and the excellent McGinn either side of half-time gave Villa a cushion and although Waghorn deflected in a Marriot strike to reduce the arrears with 10 minutes to go, Dean Smith's side were able to hold on.
Having missed out in the final under Owls manager Steve Bruce last season the relief this time around was clear and although Bruce lost his way at Villa Park this season he does deserve some credit having signed 7 of the players that started the game at Wembley for Aston Villa. Villa fan Dean Smith replaced Bruce and finished the season in style by winning 10 league games in a row from March to clinch a play-off place.
Wednesday fans will be hoping Bruce can find a winning formula in the transfer market this summer and get the Owls into promotion contention next season.
Villa join Norwich City and Sheffield United in leaving the Championship for Premier League football next season. They are replaced by relegated sides Fulham and Cardiff, who return to the Championship after just one season in the top flight and Huddersfield come down having spent two seasons in the Premier League.
Luton Town, Barnsley and Charlton will also play in the Championship next season having earned promotion from League One. They replace relegated Rotherham United, Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town.
