Sheffield Wednesday's attempts to bring in an attacking player on loan finally bore fruit on Friday as Luke Varney joined the club on a one-month loan deal from Coca Cola Championship rivals Derby County.
The 26-year-old striker was considered a hot prospect when he first came to prominence whilst playing for Crewe and he signed for Charlton for a fee in the region of £2M in 2007.
Since then his progress has stalled somewhat. Having scored only 10 times in over 50 appearances for the London club he joined Derby on an initial loan deal in November 2008 and this was made permanent in January.
Varney scored on his home debut for the Rams in December but has only appeared for them on six occasions and he will no doubt be looking to prove his worth in his short spell at Hillsborough. Wednesday were in need of adding an extra option up front due to recent injury setbacks to Leon Clarke and Akpo Sodje.
Varney, who scored Charlton's' goal in the Owls 2-1 victory at the Valley earlier in the season will be available for selection against Swansea on Saturday and his spell will also take in the matches against Norwich, QPR and Southampton. Due to the conditions on the deal he will not be eligible to play against his parent club when Derby visit Hillsborough on April 11th.
