Sheffield Wednesday has today been cleared of any wrongdoing and will face no further action in relation to the crowd trouble following the final match of last season at Hillsborough.
A 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace meant that the visitors achieved Championship safety at the expense of the Owls who were relegated to League One.
The result sparked jubilant celebrations from the lower tier of the West Stand but when some of the Eagles supporters spilled onto the pitch this sparked a reaction from sections of the home support and there were some unsightly clashes involving rival fans with some of the players even getting caught up in the trouble.
There were some concerns that the club may face a fine or some stadium control sanctions following the unsavoury events but following a thorough investigation from the sports governing body it has been concluded that the club followed ground regulations as required and could not be blamed for what happened.
It would appear that the circumstances regarding the importance and intensity of the match for both teams has been taken into account and the fact that the Owls have a good recent record in relation to crowd control at Hillsborough may also have been taken into consideration.
Speaking on the club’s official website, www.swfc.co.uk SWFC stadium operations manager John Rutherford commented that the decision, “underlines the fact that the club did everything possible in its planning and preparation to manage any incidents following what was an extremely tense game against Crystal Palace.”
