Sheffield Wednesday became the first team to take points from a trip to Huddersfield Town this season as Fernando Forestieri's 2nd half penalty won the game for the visitors.
Huddersfield had a 100% home record going into the game and would have returned to the top of the Championship table with another win but Carlos Carvalhal set his side up perfectly to nullify the Terriers preferred fast paced possession game and reduced their hosts to very few chances.
Wednesday started brightly, Kieren Lee was denied by what may have been a not spotted handball that diverted the ball wide following a swift break and from the resulting corner Wednesday went close again, David Jones ball in hitting the bar as Town struggled to clear.
Huddersfield created their best chances around the half hour mark, Westwood making to smart saves, first when Pudil deflected a shot he had covered and then palming away a Palmer strike from the edge of the box.
Just as in the first half, Wednesday started the second period on top and looked to have taken the lead when Forestieri elegantly brought an Adam Reach clearance under control and his sublime chip beat the keeper only to agonisingly rebound off the post.
The breakthrough came with around 20 minutes to go as a corner fell at the feet of Tom Lees and his strike was clearly handled by van La Parra. Forestieri made no mistake from the spot with a cool penalty.
Wednesday managed the remainder of the game well as the league leaders going into the weekend were reduced to throwing central defenders up front for the last 10 minutes in a forlorn bid to rescue something from the match. The result might have been more comprehensive as Owls right-back Liam Palmer was sent clear with a chance to make it two but the home keeper produced a solid save.
Next up for the Owls is a tough trip to Cardiff on Wednesday with the Welsh side looking for back-to-back home wins under new manager Neil Warnock before Carlos Carvalhal's side return to Hillsborough to face QPR on Saturday.
