Sturrock praises new Saint

The Owls boss brought in the Trinidad and Tobago utility man last week from his former club Southampton and it was a move that made an instant impact.

MacLean has worked tremendously hard in the last few weeks and finally got his reward for some great performances with a hat-trick against Doncaster Rovers yesterday.

Jones set up MacLean’s second goal and capitalised on comical defending to open his Owls account but Sturrock thinks that the West Indian’s arrival at Hillsborough will give the former Rangers striker more opportunities to get into the box.

He said: "With the big boy being up front we had more of an aerial threat. We could chuck a lot of things up to Kenwyne and things weren't coming back at us.

"Things were breaking around him and Steve's a better player when he's in and around the last third.”

Jones though has been given the ‘cursed’ Owls number 15 shirt – a number worn by players who have flopped or underachieved at S6 – hopefully this will change after his electric start to his Wednesday career!

Meanwhile, former Owls chief Chris Turner has been appointed the new manager at
Stockport County.
