Star's hard work pays off - exclusive

The former Chelsea midfielder was criticised by some sections of the crown when he first joined but following a terrific performance in Cardiff against Hartlepool in the play-off final, Rocastle is now going from strength to strength and has become a crowd favourite.

But this summer was not a happy one for the midfielder because while all his teammates were enjoying well-deserved breaks, Rocastle was stuck at Hillsborough trying to get fit for the new season – and that work now seems to be paying off.

“This season has been awkward for me personally but that’s what football’s all about,” Rocastle told Footymad. “The manager needs a big squad and needs players competing for places and when you get your opportunity, you take your chance.

“My injury came at the wrong time but I have had a good pre-season and I have been tired at times because I tried hard during the summer getting fit. I am more than happy to compete and it’s good playing for your position.”

Wednesday have been unlucky this season with some choice refereeing decisions and lack of goals but according to Rocastle – there’s no excuse and Wednesday just have to get down to winning games.

He added: “Referees seem to be doing the same thing to us and I don’t know what’s going on sometimes! But that’s no excuse. We have to win the games, take our chances and shut up shop.”

In other news, Swansea City have rejected a club-record £750,000 bid from Wednesday for their prolific striker Lee Trundle as Paul Sturrock’s seemingly thankless task of finding a new forward fails again.

And forgotten man Maurice Ross has joined Wolves on a week’s trial as he looks for first-team football – Frankie Simek’s great form is currently keeping the Scottish international out of the picture at Hillsborough.
