Stars eye derby upset - exclusive

United beat The Owls 1-0 at Bramall Lane last time out thanks to a goal from Alan Quinn – the first player ever to score a goal for both teams in the clash.

This particular game is vital for both camps as Wednesday need to points to increase the gap at the bottom of the league while United are chasing Reading at the top of the table.

Here’s what the Owls players told Footymad about it:

Steve MacLean

“Yeah, it’s a massive game. It’s good that we have got a game so close to the Coventry one so we can put it right for the fans. Sheffield United are second in the league so there’s no doubting that they are a good side but form goes out of the window when derbies come around so hopefully we can get a result

“It would be nice to get my first goal back (from injury) against them but I will take the win – as long as we win I’m not bothered.”

Frankie Simek

“Before the derby last time everyone was looking forward to it – it was many people’s first derby and personally I wanted to see what it was all about. But we have them at our place this time and hopefully we can play well, turn them over and get three points.

“We are not thinking about going into the game with a losing attitude. We have a great chance. When we are on our game we can beat anyone in this league I believe – that showed against Leeds earlier in the season. The support all season has been great and it will be great again on Saturday and we are looking forward to playing in front of it.”

Glenn Whelan

“The atmosphere is always great in derby games wherever you are but we did play well down at their place and they beat us 1-0 so I think we owe them one so hopefully we can get a result.”

Barry Corr

“I am really looking forward to the derby on Saturday. I went down in December but wasn’t in the squad but I was on the team bus and experienced the atmosphere.

These are the games you really want to play in but it promises to be an even bigger and better atmosphere here and we really want to do well in front of our own fans.”

Chris Adamson should remain in goal unless a loan keeper can be pulled out of the hat – Paul Sturrock has been awfully unlucky in a bid to find some experienced cover.

The Owls are also waiting to hear how long Richard Wood will be out for after missing the Coventry game but it is hopeful that he will return to a game he dominated at the back in December.

Deon Burton is doubtful while Drissa Diallo is definitely out after both picked up hamstring games in the Crystal Palace and Coventry games respectively.
