Simek & Brunt on Owls finale - exclusive

Last updated : 07 May 2007 By Andy Parsons

Wednesday went 3-0 after goals from Jermaine Johnson, Deon Burton and the most hilarious own-goal you will ever wish to see after Dickson Etuhu's back pass went into the net after Canaries stopper Tony Warner kicked air.

Norwich pulled two back but it was The Owls' day and for the first time in years, Wednesday's supporters can go home smiling knowing their team gave their all.

Simek, who missed the game with an ankle problem, told Footymad: "We started the game really well but we made it hard for ourselves in the second half but to end the season on a positive note is a really good thing, we have finished in ninth now and it's been a good season for us.

"On our third goal, you could really see it coming as the ball was bobbling all over the place, we all saw what happened, it was unbelievable but it's one of those things what can happen in football and it can be quite comical if your not on the receiving end of it.

"This season has been a success without a doubt," the USA international added. "We have come a long way and at the start of the season we were at the bottom of the league and to be there and then just finish off the play-offs is something really cool but next year we will definitely be looking to push on and finish higher."

Brunt meanwhile believes that everything which has happened in the last two months at Hillsborough can be a platform for Wednesday to build on as they now look to the 2007/08 season.

He said: "It was important to end the season on a high. Perhaps we got a bit too complacent towards the end to let them back into it but it sometimes happens like that in games where there's not really much to play for. It was good to win and getting 71 points is a spring board for next season.

"You take goals any way they come, we've had some unlucky bounces go against us this season but the pitch was hard and the ball was bobbling, what happened was unfortunate for their keeper but it's one of those things.

"We had a bad start to the season and started this year poorly but every team goes through a slump now and again. But if someone said to us at the start of the season we would finish ninth and have 71 points at the end, I would have taken that."

Look out later this week for exclusive interviews with Wednesday manager Brian Laws and Chairman Dave Allen.
