Sheffield Wednesday currently sit in 6th place in the Championship table, have closed the gap on the teams above them having won 3 games in a row and have one of the best defensive records in the division.
Only Huddersfield Town have picked up more points than the Owls in the past 15 games, but judging by the reactions of some fans to recent performances, you'd be forgiven for thinking they were fighting off relegation.
There were more than murmurs of frustration at Hillsborough during the 2nd half of Wednesday's 2-1 win against Blackburn and social media has been rife with fans venting their feelings about how poorly the team are playing.
Few would argue that Wednesday have been in fine flowing form of late but sometimes needs must. At the end of the season the table won't show which teams have played the most attractive football and no extra points will be awarded for entertainment value. All that matters is who has enough points to be in the promotion shake-up.
There is no doubt that the Owls boast some of the best attacking options in the division and Carlos Carvalhal has recently commented that he expects to see a better level of performance from his team as the season enters its final third.
The frustrations would be wholly justified were it not for the results, but like it or not football is a results business, more than it ever has been due to the financial input and the prize of promotion to the Premier League is among the most lucrative in the game.
Some might say be careful what you wish for. Derby County have struggled for goals this season but recently got back into play-off contention thanks to a tight defence. Having reached the play-off pack they have played more expansively in their last 2 home games, scoring 6 goals against teams in the bottom half. Trouble is they have let in 7 and picked up just 1 point in those 2 games.
Having shown signs of improved attacking play and tempo in the 3-0 home win against Birmingham it was disappointing that Wednesday couldn't kick on and take control of the game against struggling Blackburn having been 2-1 up at half-time but Blackburn have drawn at Huddersfield and won at Newcastle on their travels in recent months – the table doesn't reflect how the home side played in those games, just that they picked up 1 point between them.
If results were poor then the vocal disappointment would be justified but as things stand the team are producing what matters – results.
The chairman promised attractive, attacking football under his leadership and last season delivered in large parts before the Owls ultimately fell at the final hurdle. The manager has conceded performances should be better at the moment, but while the team try to fix that, we can at least be thankful that we are putting points on the board.
