Academy team looking for more success
Sheffield Wednesday’s Under 23 team returned to the top of the Professional Development League standings on Friday thanks to a 2-1 win against Bristol City. 2 first half goals from wide midfielder Fraser Preston were enough to win it for Wednesday at Hillsborough and with 2 games to go the Owls are in contention to win the league for the 2nd season in a row. Some teams below them have games in hand which could move them into contention but the Owls final 2 games are against Colchester and Burnley who have both struggled at this league during this campaign and so boss Neil Thompson will be hopeful that his side can secure more points in those games.
Since the turn of the year new first-team manager Jos Luhukay has turned to the youngsters to bolster his injury-ravaged team and the likes of Sean Clare, Jordan Thorniley and Jack Stobbs have experienced Championship involvement. The continued success of the academy teams bodes well for the Owls and the young players can now see a path into first team football if they perform consistently.
