Owls win vital as rivals earn crucial points

Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-0 home win over Leicester City was an important one as it brought to an end an alarming run of three successive defeats. The three points that were secured at Hillsborough were all the more important given the results of some of the Owls Championship relegation rivals.

Wednesday remain in the bottom three thanks to Crystal Palace’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United. It will come as little surprise to many that Wednesday’s bitter city rivals were unable to do them a favour as whenever they seem to get within touching distance of a play-off place this season they suffer a set-back and their away form of late has not been indicative of a promotion chasing side.

Blades fan Neil Warnock got off to a flying start as QPR manager, securing a 3-1 win over high-flying West Bromwich Albion to keep the Londoner’s 3 points clear of the drop zone.

Away defeats for Ipswich and Watford at Blackpool and Derby respectively mean that the Owls are now within touching distance of both and Bristol City may yet find themselves looking over their shoulders after a crushing defeat at the hands of Doncaster.

Reading and Scunthorpe sat out the weekend’s league fixtures due to the Royals continued involvement in the F.A. Cup and both find themselves still in serious trouble thanks to the results of the clubs around them. Time appears to be fast running out for bottom club Peterborough as they lost at home to Coventry and Plymouth also face an uphill battle despite coming from a goal down to pick up a point at home to Preston.

Wednesday could get out of the bottom three in midweek but they face a daunting trip to WBA. There are plenty of other games involving the Championship clubs in trouble on Tuesday and Wednesday including Ipswich Vs Cardiff, Palace Vs Bristol, Watford Vs Swansea, QPR Vs Plymouth and Reading at home to Derby.
