Wednesday progress in Carabao Cup
Sheffield Wednesday picked up their first win of the season on Thursday, negotiating a tricky League Cup tie at Sunderland to progress through the 1st round of the competition with a 2-0 victory.
Sunderland started brightly, allowing the Owls little time to settle on the ball but although the Wednesday defence looked shaky early on the home side could not create any clear-cut chances.
Just before the half-hour mark Wednesday were gifted the opportunity to take the lead when Black Cats defender Ozturk dwelt on the ball in his own area and Marco Matias nipped in to poke the Owls in front with a tidy low finish.
The goal settled the visitors down and the rest of the half was fairly comfortable though Van Aken did need to produce a last gasp challenge to deny O'Nien late on when the Owls were caught out at the back post.
Sunderland started the 2nd half on the front foot but again struggled to force Wildsmith into any action and Wednesday looked more likely to score with Matias having a shot cleared off the line and Reach denied by the onrushing keeper.
The result was sealed with 10 minutes to go when Bannan recieved the ball back having delivered a poor corner and made no such mistake with his second cross, finding the head of Reach and his glancing header went in off the post.
Jos Luhukay's team will face Premier League Wolves at Hillsborough in the 2nd round of the competition.
