Sheffield Wednesday’s reward for a first round Carling Cup victory is a tie against Scunthorpe United. The Owls struggled past League Two side Bury by a goal to nil at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening and will now make the short trip east.
Scunthorpe overcame League One side Oldham 2-1 at home last night to book their place in the draw. Curiously the Owls had already been drawn to play away in the second round before the live draw took place on Sky Sports News, having not been seeded for the stage of the competition.
Despite not being the money spinning tie that the Owls were perhaps hoping for given the introduction of some of the Premier League sides at this stage it does at least give the club a reasonable opportunity to progress to round three were the Premier League clubs that will be participating in Europe will enter the competition.
Having said that Wednesday don’t have a great recent record at Scunthorpe. They were beaten there just a few weeks ago by a goal to nil in a friendly and also lost a crucial Championship match there 2-0 last season. The Owls did however record their most comprehensive victory of last season against the Iron, beating them 4-0 at Hillsborough last August.
The second round tie will take place during the week commencing August 23rd.
