Sheffield Wednesday suffered their first competitive defeat under new boss Carlos Carvalhal on Saturday, going down 2-1 to Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
After impressing in the League Cup in midweek striker Lucas Joao kept his place in the side, replacing Atdhe Nuhiu as the Owls reverted to most of the starting 11 that had seen off Bristol City on the opening day of the season.
The visitors made a bright start and almost had an early lead when Matias cut inside and hit a low shot that came back out of a post.
Ipswich came into the game and were on top when Wednesday took the lead. Another run from Matias caused problems and his cross fell at the feet of Ross Wallace who drilled home his first Owls goal.
Crucially, Wednesday could only hold onto their lead for a couple of minutes. A long ball seemed to be under the guidance of Loovens and Helan but as both players left the ball to each other Freddie Sears nipped in to beat Westwood at his near post from an acute angle.
Ipswich started the second half on top and McGugan was forced to clear off the line from Berra but the Owls couldn't keep their hosts at bay and within 10 minutes of the restart Town went in front when Smith headed home from close range after Westwood uncharacteristically fumbled a cross from Fraser.
Westood was forced off within a injury shortly after, to be replaced by Wildsmith. Wednesday struggled to produce sustained pressure in the closing stages though Balkowski did have to make a save to deny Joao a leveller late on.
The Owls will be disappointed with the sloppy goals that they conceded and will look to bounce back when they host Reading on Wednesday evening.
