Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine was sentenced to serve 18 months in jail on Friday at a hearing at Leeds Crown Court.
The 23-year-old forward had been convicted of grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm last month following two separate incidents on nights out in Sheffield City Centre in February 2012. Madine broke the nose of one man in the first incident in the Paris Bar and just weeks later when in the Viper Rooms he shattered the cheek bone of another man. In convicting Madine of these crimes the judge warned Madine that a custodial sentence was to be expected and this has now been confirmed.
The former Carlisle striker led the Owls attack as they gained promotion from League One in 2011/12 but he has since failed to hold down a regular place in the team in the Championship. Sheffield Wednesday have yet to make a formal statement following the sentencing but the Sky Sports website reports that Madine, whose contract with the Owls earned him £5,000 per week, will now be automatically sacked by the club.
