Owls set back opens door for chasing pack

Sheffield Wednesday failed to take the chance to move up to 4th place in the Championship on Tuesday evening as they were beaten 2-1 by Brentford at Hillsborough.

The visitors passed the ball with a good tempo in the first half but ultimately it was set pieces that cost the home side as Egan headed home from a free-kick with 10 minutes of the first half remaining and then, as half-time approached, Dean powered in a header from close range, unmarked in the centre of the box from a corner.

With the score at 0-0 Wednesday were denied what seemed a nailed-on penalty when Forestieri was bundled over in the penalty area having taking advantage of a quick throw-in. Though a certain penalty it would have been against the run of play.

The 2nd half was a completely different story as the Owls bombarded the goal in front of the Kop but couldn't find a way past inspired keeper Daniel Bentley who made fine saves to deny Forestieri, Wallace, McManaman and Winnall.

Rhodes saw a header cleared off the line while Fletcher hit the post when it seemed easier to find the net and Sasso poked a rebound wide when well placed in front of goal.

The Owls did finally find the net in stoppage time when Forestieri, who worked tirelessly all game, curled in a sublime effort but it was too late to find another and the Bees held on to take the 3 points back to London.

The defeat has given the play-off chasing pack a chink of light as while Norwich are 7 points behind the Owls they visit Hillsborough a week on Saturday and that comes after Wednesday's tough trip to fellow play-off contenders Leeds this weekend.

With two games in hand, Fulham are also back in the hunt as 6 points from those two games would close the gap to just 3 points.
