Sheffield Wednesday saw off the challenge of League 2 promotion hopefuls Rochdale to progress to the 5th round of the F.A. Cup on Saturday thanks to a 2-1 away win.

Rochdale enjoyed a comprehensive victory against Leeds United in the 3rd round and having needed a replay to see off non-league Macclesfield, Wednesday were certainly not going into the clash with any complacency.

Both sides created a couple of scoring opportunities in a well contested first half and the Owls went close to taking the lead close to the break when imposing American defender Onyewu hit a post before Maghoma failed to finish when through on goal.

The visitors picked continued to push at the start of the second half and took the lead when Maguire's dangerous corner was flicked home by the head of Mattock. Minutes later the lead was doubled as Onyewu prodded home from another corner at the second attempt.

The hectic start to the second half continued as Rochdale then got themselves back into the game thanks to a fine from Rose, scoring from 25 yards. With 30 minutes still to play the home side were back in contention and received a further boost moments later. Mattock had already been booked when he was adjudged to have fouled Henderson and the full back received his marching orders.

Despite being a man down the Owls were able to keep their hosts at bay for most of the remainder of the game and they continued to offer a sporadic threat of their own on the break and from set pieces.

Rochdale's top scorer, Hogan, forced a save from Martinez in the last minute and Wednesday saw out 5 minutes of stoppage time to book their place in the last 16 of the competition.
