Sheffield Wednesday advanced into the 3rd round of the League Cup on Tuesday evening, thanks to a 1-0 home win against League Two side Oxford United.
Having won 4-0 away at Brentford in the first round Oxford will have travelled north with the hope of causing another upset and Wednesday were never likely to take their lower league opponents for granted as a result.
The first half was one of few chances. Lees tested Slocombe early on but other than that Wednesday failed to test the visiting keeper sufficiently enough with Sasso and Wallace both missing the target.
The home side found the goal they needed early in the second half when a deep cross evaded the Oxford keeper and as the ball was returned into the six yard box Nuhiu was on hand to head home.
The League Two side debated the goal, with suggestions that Nuhiu may have fouled the keeper from the initial cross and there was a possibility that he may have handled the ball before heading home.
Further chances for the substitute pairing of Matias and Sougou came and went but one goal proved to be enough.
Although the deciding goal was worthy of debate the fact the Owls deserved the victory was not in doubt as they dominated in terms of creating chances with Oxford rarely threatening the home goal.
The draw for the next round will take place when Tuesday’s ties come to an end with the Premier League clubs that are playing in Europe this season entering the competition at this stage.
