Sheffield Wednesday posted a creditable away point at Middlesbrough but they once again failed to hold onto a lead and remain without a win so far this season.
Wednesday have held the lead in 4 of the 5 league games they have played to date but have only picked up 3 points in total and are currently just one place above the bottom three and one point above the bottom of the Championship table.
Wednesday gained the lead just after the half hour mark when Michail Antonio capitalised from close range from the Owls fifth corner of the contest.
Shortly afterwards the visitors were dealt a blow when captain Anthony Gardner was forced off with injury to be replaced by Miguel Llera.
Boro began the second half with purpose and were on level terms within five minutes when Carayol tapped in from inside the six yard box after good work by Jutkiewitz.
The home side spent most of the remainder of the match in the ascendancy but could not find a way past Kirkland and the Owls were denied late on when Steele saved Antonio's low drive.
The Championship now takes a break for international fixtures with the Owls returning to action against fellow strugglers Yeovil at Hillsborough on September 14th.
