Sheffield Wednesday paid the price for 2 key moments in a closely fought derby at Elland Road. Clear cut chances were few and far between as expected with two well organised teams going head to head in the top six in the Championship.
Leeds scored with the only shot on target in the first-half. The Owls switched off for a second with the home side in possession down the Owls right. Sasso seemed to pass Wood on for Loovens to mark in the penalty area and as the cross came in the defence were looking for an offside flag that rightly never came and Wood had the freedom of the penalty area to control the ball and tap home from close range.
Wednesday brought McManaman on for Fox at half-time and were the team in the ascendancy for much of the 2nd 45 minutes. The Owls had a great chance to draw level when Hutchinson was manhandled from a corner but Jordan Rhodes saw the resulting penalty saved by Robert Green. The former Blackburn striker then had another opportunity from the corner but headed over from close range. Glenn Loovens headed over a similar chance a few minutes later and Barry Bannan, on for Almen Abdi fired just wide from the edge of the penalty area.
Leeds offered little threat to Westwood, who didn't have a save to make in the Owls goal but having taken the lead in the first half they were resolute enough to maintain a solid defensive line and restrict the chances that Wednesday created from open play.
The Owls have now lost two in succession and their place in the top six is likely to come under threat from Fulham and Norwich, with the Canaries next up for Wednesday at Hillsborough next Saturday.
