Sheffield Wednesday gained there 1st win of the season against Curzon Ashton at home on Sunday afternoon. The Owls started the game the brightest with more evidence of the pure creative football they have been showing bits off in the first four games of the season. And it was Wednesday who got the first goal with a composed finish from Sarah Danby, grabbing her second of the season. Wednesday went on to press the Curzon goal, but good organisational defence work from the visitors prevented the Owls from extending their lead. And in first half injury time Curzon scored a well struck goal beating the Wednesday keeper Danni Maslin.
The second half saw more of the same from the Owls, creating and getting into the attacking third on many occasions, but as like the first half the final product was missing. That was until Rachel Skeemer put the Owls back in front with a well struck goal. Wednesday continued to press, and once again got a well worked goal from down the left, with good work from Scott, Danby and Gingell which saw a smiling Laura Windle pop up at the back post to put Wednesday 3-1 up. Curzon continued to defend well and did get round the back of the Owls defence on more than one occasion, but like Wednesday in the first half the final product was missing. The Owls continued to play the ball around and created many chances with some neat football and it was Beth Gingell who put the game beyond Curzon with the forth goal of the game. As the clock was running down to the full time whistle Curzon scored yet another well hit goal to grab their second of the game.
Assistant Manager Liam Kelly; "It's been a long time coming but we finally have the 1st win of the season, which is most pleasing for everyone at the club. The players stepped up to the mark today, in terms of commitment, quality, desire and having that winning mentality. We've picked up 4 points in the last 7 days and as much as we would have preferred more, we will take them and look to move forward. The players showed some good evidence of the kind of football they can play if they believe in themselves and everyone at the club is proud of them all. But a mention today must go to the likes of Barker, who is developing into a very effective player. Skeemer, whose feet and positive attitude drove us forward today, if anyone deserved a goal it was her, she's so exciting to watch, and also De Silva, who today played her best game of the season so far. Now league attention gets a break and we look forward to next's weeks against Everton. We've had there reserves watched today which included some first teamers, so we have some idea of what to expect, but our thoughts are if our players continue to do what we do well with that added quality and decrease the individual errors I’m more than positive we can cause an upset. And at the end of the day that is what cup football is all about."
