Sheffield Wednesday secured their place in the Championship play-offs with a game to spare thanks to a 1-0 win at Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Carlos Carvalhal’s side produced a professional display at Portman Road, restricting their hosts to hardly any chances and influential midfielder Kieran Lee popped up to adeptly flick home the winner from close range with 15 minutes to go.
Wednesday have now won 6 games in a row for the first time since 1993 and had they not conceded a late leveller at Barnsley it would have been 7 in succession. The fact that it has took a run of 19 points from 7 games to secure a top six spot is testament to the tough challenge that the Championship represents.
The Owls face fellow play-off qualifiers Fulham at Hillsborough in the final game of the regular season next Sunday in a match which will determine who they will face in the semi-finals. Wednesday are currently in 4th place, ahead of Huddersfield on goal difference and a point behind Reading meaning that they could end up facing any of the other 3 sides. A win would ensure that the Owls would play the 2nd leg of the semi-final at home.
