Sheffield Wednesday left it late on transfer deadline day to complete one of the biggest moves of the January transfer window with the move for Middlesbrough's Jordan Rhodes. As the window closed last night the deal had not been confirmed, leaving Owls fans with an anxious wait for news today.
Thankfully it has now been confirmed that he will team up with his dad Andy, the goalkeeping coach at Hillsborough, on an initial loan deal until the end of the current season with the signing automatically becoming a permanent one in the summer.
Rhodes has been a long-time target for the Owls with many fearing but the move would never materialise but this can now be regarded as a true statement of intent from Wednesday as they look to continue their push for promotion to the Premier League in their 150th year.
The 26-year-old Scotland international has been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career. Having started out at Ipswich he made his mark at Huddersfield where he netted 87 goals in 129 first team starts, helping Huddersfield to promotion from League One.
He moved to Blackburn in the summer of 2012 and continued his remarkable record in front of goal in the Championship, netting 85 times in less than 160 starts for the Lancashire side. Last year he made the move to promotion chasing Middlesbrough in the winter transfer window and scored some crucial goals that helped his side achieve automatic promotion to the top flight. This season has seen his first team opportunities limited in the Premier League and so he has chosen to make the move to what will hopefully be another successful promotion push.
