Sheffield Wednesday’s reward for their 1-0 2nd round Capital One Cup win over Oxford is an away tie at Premier League Newcastle United.
The Magpies enjoyed a 4-1 home win against NorthamptonTown and Toon boss Steve McLaren has been given the added incentive of a financial bonus if they can win silverware this season. Newcastle have been known for not taking cup competitions too seriously in recent years but owner Mike Ashley has stated that the club is looking to make positive progress in all competitions this season.
Wednesday’s last visit to St James’ Park ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat towards the beginning of the 2009/10 Championship campaign, a season which saw Newcastle gain promotion while the Owls suffered relegation.
The tie will be played during the week commencing 21st September.
