5-goal thriller goes Wednesday's way

Sheffield Wednesday ended their brief trip to Germany with a win on Sunday, beating 2nd division side Holstein Kiel 3-2. The Owls has been beaten 1-0 by VfB Lubeck on Friday but fielded a much-changed line-up for this game against stronger opposition.

Lee Bullen's side fell behind inside 20 minutes when a long delay for a VAR check resulted in a penalty that even the home side seemed surprised to be awarded. Serra scored from the spot and 20 minutes later Kiel went 2-0 up when Lee beat Westwood with a low finish.

The Owls halved the deficit just before half-time when Rhodes headed in from a Barry Bannan centre and the visitors had a platform to turn the game around in the 2nd half.

Wednesday were level 5 minutes into the 2nd half when Fletcher, who had already struck the woodwork since the restart, scored following good play from Bannan and Reach. The contest was decided with 25 minutes to go when Fletcher scored a close-range header at the back post from Harris' good run and cross.

The main concern for Wednesday will be an injury worry concerning Sam Hutchinson as the midfielder was forced off in the first half. The Owls complete their pre-season schedule against Espanyol at Hillsborough next Sunday.
