Sheffield Wednesday's pre-season preparations got underway in earnest at York City on Saturday and the Owls recorded a comfortable 2-0 win against the League 2 side.
Gary Madine, starting up front alongside trialist Achille Campion, saw 2 opportunities blocked inside the first ten minutes before heading a presentable opportunity off target.
The scorching conditions meant that the pace of the game was never going to be frantic and it was after a short drinks break midway through the first half that the Owls took the lead. Chris Maguire fired in a well hit free-kick after Jacques Maghoma was brought down and a deflection of a York player gave the keeper little chance.
With half-time approaching Wednesday doubled their lead when Maguire was afforded space 30 yards from goal and he let fly with a low strike that found the bottom corner.
Stuart Gray introduced 5 substitutes at half-time, including Nuhiu, Lavery and Antonio and the trio all went close to increasing the score in the second half. At the other end Wednesday's makeshift defence, bereft of any recognised centre-backs, were able to keep their hosts largely at bay with Chris Kirkland and substiture keeper Joe Wildsmith forced to make few telling saves by the Minstermen.
The Owls next test comes at Bury on Friday evening.
