Sheffield Wednesday full-back Tommy Spurr has been included in the Coca-Cola Championship team of the week as chosen by the Press Association. The 11 best performers are highlighted on the football league’s official website and of the full round of matches played by the 24 teams this weekend Spurr was deemed to be the pick of the left-sided defenders.
A product of the Owls academy Spurr has struggled to find his best form this season but the defence as whole has improved significantly in the past few matches with the return of Captain Darren Purse proving to be a major factor in this. Young centre-back Mark Beevers probably had his best game of the season against Derby on Saturday as the Owls kept the Rams at arms length in the first half before taking the game to their opponents for most of the second period.
Somewhat surprisingly Derby goalkeeper Stephen Bywater also made the team following his clean sheet at Hillsborough. Although he made a couple of good saves to deny the Owls early on in the encounter Wednesday will feel that for all the possession they had in the second half they didn’t test him enough on his return to the side.
With wins needed and goals currently in short supply hopefully Wednesday’s attacking players can follow the lead of their defensive colleagues by putting themselves in contention to make the top Championship team in the closing weeks of the season.
