Sheffield Wednesday made it two wins from two at the start of the new season on Tuesday evening as they beat Notts County to advance to the second round of the League Cup.
The Owls were defeated by Rotherham at the same stage last season but an upset never looked likely tonight as the home side started quickly to take the game away from the visitors.
Wednesday had already shown some attacking intent when just two minutes in Jacques Maghoma fired them in front from the edge of the box. The hosts didn't rest on their early advantage and Joe Mattock had also seen a cross clip the bar by the time Gary Madine placed home his centre to double the advantage after just ten minutes.
Atdhe Nuhiu then managed to miss three presentable opportunities before half-time and it took over half an hour before the visitors manged to create a credible opportunity and even then Kirkland was rarely tested in the home goal.
County made three changes at half-time but it failed to stem the tide with Nuhiu again missing chances before he finally put the result to bed with a stooping header just after the hour mark.
Murray went close to a consolation goal late on while Maguire almost made it four at the other end but the majority of a healthy crowd of close to 13,000 will have been suitably satisfied with the 3-0 win, warming Wednesday up nicely for a tough Championship test at home to Derby on Saturday.
The draw for the second round of the Capital One Cup takes place on Wednesday.
