In a totally unexpected move by the club, but one of the best decisions they have made for a long time, the former Plymouth manager penned a four-year extension to his current deal which was due to expire in the summer.
The club was put into a shade of uncertainty a few weeks ago when chairman Dave Allen let the news slip that a new contract would not be negotiated until Christmas after he let slip a private conversation to Sturrock.
But now all seems to be forgiven as Wednesdayites will know that for the first time in more than a decade that finally the club has a bit of stability at least.
Sturrock said: “I'm very pleased. This is a huge football club, the plans have been put in place and I would like to see it out.
“Kaven Walker (club chief executive) and myself have been in discussions for the past week or so and I'm delighted because I feel there is a solidity to the football club. We can put all these rumours to bed and get on with the job in hand which is to progress the club in the direction we feel it merits.”
Allen said in a statement: “As I've previously said, we had both decided that Christmas would be the right time to finalise the details. However, I am fed up with all the scurrilous rumours in the media concerning the managerial situation.
“Paul and I have been discussing his new contract for a number of weeks now and it's time these rumours were all brought to an end.”
Meanwhile, the club have released details why Wednesday has only been allocated half the number of tickets they would normally get for the trip to
It reads: “Please note our ticket allocation for the game at the Stadium of Light has been cut from SAFC's usual maximum of over 5,000 by the Wearside club's Safety Advisory Group, due to opposition club reports which have identified travelling Wednesdayites as being increasingly guilty of persistent standing.
“The Owls urge all away fans to remain seated whilst the game is in progress in the hope that our allocation will be increased in future matches at Sunderland: additionally, we urge fans to remain seated at all games, home and away, in the hope that our allocation will not be cut in the same way by other clubs' Safety Advisory Groups.”
