Sheffield Wednesday winger Jermaine Johnson has been rewarded for his fine display in the Owls 2-1 win at local rivals Barnsley with a place in the Coca-Cola Championship team of the week.
The team is chosen each week by the Press Association and is shown on the Football League’s official website. Due to Wednesday’s abysmal run of form recently it has been quite a while since any of the Owls squad made the line-up but JJ’s inclusion was certainly well deserved this week.
The wide man obviously has ability to threaten defences at this level but has often left Wednesday fans frustrated in the first half of this season as he has flattered to deceive and failed to find any sort of consistency. However playing in a more unfamiliar role, just off striker Marcus Tudgay up front in Alan Irvine’s first game in charge JJ caused the Tykes no end of problems.
Johnson’s first half strike proved to be the winner and his pace was a constant menace throughout South Yorkshire derby and with a bit more composure Wednesday might have added to their two goals on the day due to the problems he caused the home sides defence.
JJ had started Tuesday evening’s game at Blackpool in a similar fashion before an injury brought a premature end to his performance and he will be hoping the problem isn’t a serious one having found more encouraging form and belief under the new manager.
