The Fulham defender joined on a month's loan and will go straight into the team to play MK Dons on Saturday to replace Heckingbottom, who is suspended for the clash against Danny Wilson's men.
Sturrock is keen on his players showing good discipline at all times and he did not want to change his team around position-wise, hence bringing in a specialist left-back to replace the former Bradford man.
But Brunt has been inconsistent this season and when Heckingbottom comes back for the Barnsley clash the weekend after, Green could easily be deployed in the left-wing position if Sturrock is needing further options.
Brunt's place in the team could be under further scrutiny when Matt Hamshaw returns from injury.
Wednesday's longest-serving player is set to come back to training following a hamstring problem.
