New boss in player pledge

The Owls face up to Ian Rush’s Chester City at Hillsborough on Wednesday night and it will be the first time Sturrock will watch over a game at S6 as the club’s new manager.

He got off to the perfect start on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Wrexham and was pleased overall with the performance.

Usually the LDV trophy is a chance for youngsters and fringe players to shine but Sturrock is throwing his team into the deep end in a bid to find out who really will be a mainstay in the first eleven.

He said: “For Wednesday’s game I promised the team there would be no changes if we beat Wrexham and they will get to keep their places, I just want them to stay healthy and competitive from now on in.”

But despite the impressive and at times high-tempo display in Wales, the former Saints boss says that the players can still improve on their fitness.

He continued: “The players showed against Wrexham that they cannot keep with that pace for a full 90 minutes and that is something that we will have to work on during the next month in training.

“It was a tempo I used to play with Plymouth and I want to carry on with that here at Wednesday.”
