Morrison moves on

Sheffield Wednesday defender Michael Morrison left the club on Friday and signed for League One counterparts Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee. The move sees his Owls career come to an end after just 6 months at Hillsborough.

Morrison joined Wednesday from Leicester City in January 2011 for an undisclosed transfer fee, signing three-and-a-half year deal with the club. Then manager Alan Irvine gave Morrison his home debut against Charlton that month but with the Owls struggling to find results Irvine lost his job in February and Morrison struggled to settle.

Morrison earned many plaudits for his consistent displays when Leicester won promotion from League One in 2009 and at that time he was a regular in the side but by the end of 2010 he had lost his place in the Foxes side as Sven Goran Eriksson looked to transform the club and it was clear that his future lay elsewhere.

Having only been with the Owls for a short time, the departure of Irvine and the general defensive frailties of the team as a whole did little to aid Morrison’s confidence and his performances under new boss Gary Megson were typical of a player having difficulties in finding his form. He lost his place in the side and indeed the squad towards the end of the season and the fact that he has now moved on will come as little surprise regardless of the short time he has been at Hillsborough.

Michael Morrison made just 15 appearances in his time at Hillsborough and if ever there was a case that exemplified a player making the wrong move and the wrong time this was it. A change of scenery may help the 23 year old to get his career back on track whilst the departure will free up further funds for Gary Megson as he continues to shape his new-look Owls team ahead of the 2011/12 season.
