MacLean/Simek on Coventry loss - exclusive

Two goals conceded from free-kicks were The Owls undoing but the away side were guilty of missing some great chances too.

After Tuesday’s results, it was a perfect opportunity to get clear of the relegation zone but despite Wednesday’s endeavour, it was not enough in the end.

MacLean, making his first start since March 6 last year told Footymad: “Yeah we did alright but we are disappointed with the scoreline especially after all the results went for us on Tuesday night.

"We have a massive game now on Saturday and we have to pick ourselves up from this and its good that we have a game so close to this one so we can bounce back. We did miss a few chances, I was guilty of a few but we have to start putting them away if we want to move up in the table.

“It was personally nice for me to be back but we had a bad result but it is good to be back so hopefully I can do well and score some goals for the team. The last few months have been a nightmare but hopefully all that is behind me now so hopefully I can kick on now and contribute towards the team.

"Being out was horrible thought. It was ok when the boys were getting results but when they get beaten, you just want to be out there helping out – but like I say, I have put that behind me now and I’m determined to do well.

"I was down at times but you have to keep yourself going, keep fighting, and just keep thinking positives. But I had some very good people around me so fair play to them as well.”

Simek meanwhile knows it is an opportunity lost to give Wednesday more breathing room from the chasing pack in the relegation zone.

He added: “We are very disappointed. I thought that the goals that we gave away were very sloppy and they weren’t like us at all. The first, to be fair was a good set-piece but we should have been aware whereas the second one we didn’t switch on again quick enough. There was a lack of communication; I will take the flack for that one but we learn from these things and we are still five points clear of the drop zone – but what a chance it was to go eight points clear.

"I think Millwall were the only team who got a point on Tuesday but we can’t be that down. We have to push on and we have a massive game on Saturday.

“I have been feeling really ill in the last few days and being laid in bed. On Tuesday I was feeling better and today I was feeling fine so I played. We are struggling big time at the moment with injuries though: Woody didn’t play against Coventry and Drissa pulled a hamstring, you don’t get over those in a week.

"But we are going to fight on because we have good spirit in the camp and I am sure at the end of the season that we will still be in this league.”
