MacLean answers critics - exclusive

Steve MacLean has scored six goals in six games: one against Brentford, Walsall and Wrexham and his hat-trick away at Doncaster and in 30 appearances this season, his ratio is close to a goal every two games.

But despite his selfless work on the pitch by becoming not only the club’s leading scorer but goal creator as well - some fans earlier were getting on the young Scotsman’s back for not being up to the job.

Now he is amongst the top four marksmen in the league and the former Rangers striker just wants to get more goals.

He told Footymad: “I don’t care about answering my earlier critics; I just keep on going to be fair, I keep getting in the positions and keep trying to get goals but it is a team game and we are playing much better now as well as pushing up the league. Hopefully we can continue like we have been doing and get promotion.”

Five of his goals have come from the spot though but MacLean has shown great form from twelve yards out, and claims that practice makes perfect.

“I take a few penalties in training but training is different to playing in a match,” he says. “When you are playing on a Saturday afternoon you have to have a bit of bottle and luckily enough I have scored a few.”

Steve has had his fair share of partners in attack this season and has adapted to many different styles alongside him, but what does he make of the livewire Jones?

“Kenwyne’s done well,” admits MacLean. “He’s a big, physical boy, he has scored some good goals and hopefully the club can keep him here so we can carry on our good partnership.

“With the form he has been showing here, he could get recalled but at the end of the day, him being here has benefited both parties and I am sure if he goes back to Southampton, he will go back a better player because of the experience he has here – but if we can keep him that is obviously good for us.”

Meanwhile, Joey O'Brien has signed for Wednesday for another month on loan from Bolton Wanderers.
