The Owls' 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Wolves showed Wednesday's defensive frailties which have been far too apparent in their first two games of the season against Ipswich and Rotherham.
But apparently a deal to sign Reading's Sam Sodje is close - he was believed to be at the game yesterday.
Sodje was in the Brentford side who were beaten by Wednesday in the 2005 play-off semi-finals - he then helped Reading reach the Premiership although spent the latter end of last season at West Brom.
Laws, who would not confirm who the player was, said: We've spoken to a club in the last few days and manage to reach an agreement and now had talks with the player.
"We're making silly mistakes in games and that is costing us. I'm extremely concerned with the goals we've conceded and I need to address the problem."
Laws' search for a new midfielder broke down though on Friday after his target got injured while training for his club.
In other news, Wednesday's League Cup clash with Hartlepool will take place at Hillsborough on Tuesday 28 August.
