In the second part of an exclusive interview with the Owls boss, he talks about his desires for the club, Wednesday's potential and exceeding expectations at Hillsborough.
But with the likes of loanees Scott Carson, Nicky Weaver, Iain Turner, Brad Jones and Mark Crossley being the last line of defence in the last few seasons, Laws knows that Wednesday need a goalkeeper to call their own more than anything.
Laws on summer rebuilding...
"If you look at any team then you have to build and you have to build wisely, but you also need foundation
- the foundation that we have at the moment is reasonably good. I want to add two or three new players to what we have; it could be reasonably good next season, although it could be very good and there's a lot of work to be done now."Despite the whistle being blown on Sheffield Wednesday's season, the hard work really starts now. The players can go away and have a good break which they deserve but the management now have to really knuckle down and get in the players we require to strengthen the team which we will be trying to do.
"I am certainly not going to be forced into anything; I won't rush into anything and certainly won't bring in players for the sake of it. It has to be important that we recognise which players can add to what we have got.
Laws on new signings...
"A goalkeeper is priority
- this club has had 18 months worth of loan goalkeepers which isn't good enough so we need to get a permanent goalkeeper in or two and that's something which I will be working extremely hard on."The strengths of our side are the attacking aspects but we have to strengthen in defence as we are not that great in that area. I'm not saying we are not good enough but we need more strength in depth so again, that's another area I need to work on."
Laws on new contracts...
"They (Lee Bullen, Deon Burton and Steve MacLean) have all been offered contracts. I am talking to the players this week, letting them know what we expect from them, readdress what we have gone through this season and that's one thing we will do with all the players.
"But like any other football club, when you bring in players there will always be causalities and there will definitely be one or two but we want to make it a positive thing also and the players who have done well will be rewarded with contract offers - it's down to them whether they sign it or not, if we want to keep them then we'll try and keep them but we won't be having a gun held to our heads if they want more money here, there and everywhere it won't happen because we haven't got it."
Laws on attracting new players...
"I think this is a big club; when I was at Scunthorpe, I had to beg, seal and borrow for funds. I had to plead with players to come to the football club because, and with no disrespect to Scunthorpe, it's not the most attractive football club in the world, it's a nice and solid football club but here we have magnificent supporters and a magnificent stadium to go with it.
"That must be one of the biggest ingredients and biggest characteristics in the game and if nobody wants to come to Sheffield Wednesday because of those reasons then we have a problem. But I really think it will be easier for me to attract good players here."
Laws on next season's expectations...
"We have set the bar very high at the moment and let's try to raise it higher. It's a very high bar at the moment with 71 points to beat but I have a lot of belief in the players that we can do it, and with a good start I think we can have a good season."
Tomorrow, we get chairman Dave Allen's take on the season. I would like to personally thank Brian for taking the time to speak to us.
