Laws admitted: "What we are doing is that we are talking to Sunderland at the moment about Kavanagh and it is still not a 'no' because they are waiting to see who recovers in time for the weekend and if he (Black Cats manager Roy Keane) has got a few recovered in time then there could be a chance for Kav to be here for Saturday's game. I will probably find out more about that this evening in whether we have achieved that aim or not."
Keane admits that Laws has been on the phone 'every ten minutes' but the Wednesday boss has not given up hope about getting the midfielder back.
But Laws' transfer dealings may not be completely over, even if the Kavanagh door shuts, as he admits he has to farm players out on loan to bring any fresh blood into Hillsborough - although with a distinct lack of bodies at the moment, showing any player a temporary way out is the last thing he wants.
He added : "It's all very, very clear what my objectives are - I have to move one or two players out on loan before I can bring anybody else in - that's the financial life of the football club. I know what direction I want to go in and I know what I want to do but this is a problem that we have at the moment. But we'll get on with it and we have a squad of players which I strongly believe in can continue us pushing us up the league.
"We have had one or two enquiries but nothing concrete at this moment in time. At the moment, I have 18 first-team players available so the squad's not that thick - we have to be careful that we don't release players in the wrong positions.
